What a journey to self discovery. I think I’ll use this moment to take a deep breath (inhale for 5, hold for five, out for five). About five years ago, my partner told me that he has been looking at opportunities for work in London. I was surprised but knew that he loved Vancouver, Canada too much to ever make the leap. A few months later he told me he got a job offer here and a couple months after that, the two of us and our dog Champ, moved our lives across the pond to this big wonderful city. I say that because it has been an amazing experience for me thus far.
About a year after we moved, I landed an amazing opportunity working with a substance misuse team in prisons. They required me to take Level 2 and 3 of Counselling Skills as part of our training. This started my true calling, becoming a counsellor.
I completed those two courses and then signed up for a Level 4 qualification in Integrative Therapeutic Counselling. Man that course was amazing, It challenged me to look at myself first and foremost. There were many old demons in the closet that needed to be unlocked and sorted . I worked with a therapist for almost two years, who helped me unpack some of this baggage. I did it though and I can see the importance of self awareness and working on self before delving into this field of work.
Thank you to my tutor’s and my classmates and also that wonderful substance misuse team who guided me in this direction.
So here I am, ready to journey into private practice. I’m excited to share the journey with you here.
